A soldering iron is simply an electric tool that gets very hot at the tip and melts the solder.  Solder is what holds the glass pieces together when doing the foil technique.  Soldering irons come in various types and power ratings.  Some have adjustible power settings but these are generally more expensive than the fixed temperature types.  For a beginner, a fixed temperature soldering iron around 80-100 watts will do most projects.  A soldering iron station makes a good investment as it already has a stand for the hot iron and many times a sponge for cleaning the tip.  The Best Stained Glass Art Store has a lare selection of soldering irons for great prices.

Foiling tools are used to help wrap Foil around edge of the cut glass.  Foil is sticky on one side, and is metal, typically copper, on the other side. The foil gives a surface for the solder to adhere to locking the glass pieces together. Foils come in many widths that allow the artist to decide how wide to make the seams or adjust for the thickness of the glass.  Some special tools are available to make foiling easier. The foil must be securely attached to the glass and is made easy by a hand foilerw also known as a burnisher.  The technique is simple but requires a little practice to be fast at it.  After the glass is cut, the copper foil is attached to the edge of the glass making sure the foil is centered.  It then needs to be pressed onto the glass edge and wrapped around to the front face and back face and securely pressed on.

A glass cutter is a hand tool that scores the glass using a V-shaped steel or carbide wheel. The cutter does not actually cut the glass but rather creates a groove, which will allow the glass to break along that line. Glass cutters are available in many shapes and styles that allow the artist to use a cutter that is the most comfortable.   In addition to the cutter, a quality cutting oil is necessary to extend the life of the steel or carbide cutting wheel.  The Best Stained Glass Art Store has a large selection of stained glass cutters at great prices.
